Various smartphones and related devices are mushrooming every year for different income groups.
The HTC One M8s and the HTC One ME are medium budget smartphones released in April and June of 2015 respectively. While HTC has not let down its fans most of the time, has it succeeded in building the same rapport among the public with these two devices? This article brings out an interesting analysis on some good to know features and specifications of these handsets for you to understand how well one HTC smartphone pits against the other. Almost all vital features are discussed here for HTC lovers to decide which gadget appeals to them.
Body Material, Dimensions and Weight
The M8s uses a combination of plastic and aluminum alloy for its body construction with aluminum alloy featuring on most areas of the body. The ME is more or less similar with the only difference being that the plastic is replaced by polycarbonate. However, the body is primarily plastic with aluminum alloy taking its place only on the accents. The size difference of the two gadgets is also marginal. While the HTC One M8s is available in a size of 5.76 x 2.78 x 0.38 inches; the HTC One ME sizes up at 5.94 x 2.83 x 0.38 inches. Like the size, their weights are also more or less the same. Their corresponding weights are 160 and 155g respectively. HTC has gone an extra step in ensuring that its M8s handset is IP X3 certified that makes it splash resistant. The ME does not support this feature.
Verdict: In all ways, the HTC One M8s is more promising than the HTC One ME. First, the almost full metal body makes it stylish and classy. Second, the smaller size results in the handset being sleeker and more compact. Third, the splash resistant aspect results in avoiding minor damages in case of liquid spills.
Screen Display and Pixel Resolution & Density
The IPS LCD screen (Super LCD 3), aspect ratio of 16:9 and rendition of 16 million colors are all that is common with the screens of both the smartphones. The M8s has a 5-inch screen with 1080 x 1920 pixel resolution and 441ppi pixel density. In comparison, the ME comes as a 5.2-inch screen featuring a pixel resolution of 1440 x 2560 and a pixel density of 565ppi.
Verdict: Thanks to their LCD displays, both the smartphone screens render wide viewing angles. But owing to the bigger pixel resolution and more concentrated pixel density, the HTC One ME assures you of crisper and clearer texts and images. This is considering the fact that both screens are of almost the same size.
Cameras
Supporting dual LED flash, HTC’s M8s comprises a 13MP rear snapper featuring 4160 x 3120 pixel resolution for images and 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution for videos. The camera encapsulates almost all the common features in a smartphone. The embedded camcorder records videos of 1080p @ 60fps and 720p @ 120fps, as well as HDR videos. In contrast, the ME has a bigger dual LED 20MP snapper with 5384 x 3752 and 3840 x 2160 resolutions for images and videos respectively. Features supported are pretty much the same as the other HTC smartphone. The front 4MP HTC One M8s snapper depicts 2560 x 1920 image resolution and 1920 x 1080 video resolution. This is replaced by 2560 x 1920 image resolution and 1920 x 1080 video resolution in the 5MP snapper of the HTC One ME. However, both snappers record videos @ 30fps.
Verdict: Undoubtedly the overall credit goes to the ME for making its images and videos livelier and clearer with its bigger primary camera. But for selfies and video calls, the M8s is a shade better.
Hardware, Memory and Software
The primary similarity is the 64-bit architecture for an octa core processor. While the M8s has a 1.7GHz processor with 2GB RAM, the ME is equipped with a 2.2GHz processor and 3GB RAM. The first HTC smartphone offers 16GB ROM for internal storage whereas the second one supports 32GB. You can use memory cards to increase the memory externally up to 128GB. Although the two handsets have Android’s Lollipop installed, the HTC One ME has a slightly later version of the same when compared to that of the HTC One M8s. Moreover, the HTC smartphones are integrated with HTC Sense UI 7.0 for user customization. Additionally, there is a planned upgrade of the operating system in ME to Marshmallow. There is no such talk as far as the M8s is concerned.
Verdict: The extra RAM and better clocking frequency definitely make the performance of the HTC One ME smoother and faster than that of the HTC One M8s. Also, the operating system upgrade possibility is an added advantage for those who would like their smartphones to have the latest version of the same.
Number of SIMs
The ME and the M8s use nano SIMs. While the ME offers the possibility to insert two SIMs at a time, the M8s can be used only for one SIM.
