Microsoft is not new in the smartphone world, but the latest release of the Lumia 950 gives this tech giant a fresh start in this industry.

Windows Phone 8 was a mere look-alike of the desktop version, but now that Windows 10 Mobile is here, it brings in something new and substantial. Microsoft gave it a go, and they tried this time, coming out with one of the best smartphone designs, specs as well as features that can put this phone up there with the big boys. But for now, the Windows OS maker still has some miles to cover before hitting apeak.

Hardware and software specs

The Lumia 950 is priced at $550 and honestly; don’t expect much when it comes to the looks. Nonetheless, Microsoft has included a 5MP snapper on the front and a sensor for identifying your eye. The display size is 5.2 inches with support for WQHD AMOLED screen technology. On the rear, you will notice a shiny metallic Windows logo and a tri-tone flash, a single speaker as well as a 20MP snapper.

On the inside, you will come across a hexacore Snapdragon 808 chip and a RAM of 3GB. The large display of this phone requires a solid battery unit to power it and Microsoft were up to it with a 3,000mAh battery that integrates perfectly with the Qi wireless charging standard that ships with the device.

There is a nano SIM slot on the flank of the battery as well as an unnoticeable microSD card slot just below it. Despite its presence, you might end up never using it since this gizmo comes equipped with onboard storage memory of 32GB, but the SD card can take it up to 200GB, which a welcome for any person wishing to store numerous files on the device.

The Lumia 950 also comes in with support for USB Type-C port for data transfer as well as charging. As you all know, this new device runs on the latest Windows 10 Mobile, something that Microsoft claims is the future of computing.

The competition

Even though Windows 10 is the future of computing, there are still some viable options worth considering the Lumia 950 smartphone. You can get the iPhone 6S, which comes in with pretty many amazing features and specs, but at a price, that is almost $100 more than the Lumia. If this is too much for you, there is a cheaper Nexus 6P that costs $499 and with it you will get the latest Android OS, a Snapdragon 810 chipset and a decent RAM of 3GB.

If you are working on a budget, the Nexus 5X that goes for just $379 should be your thing. This device is equippedwith the same brains as the Lumia 950, and so is the latest Moto X Pure Edition, which also houses a Snapdragon 808 chipset.
