HTC had a rough year, competing against big names in the smartphone industry, and didn’t get too much praise with its One M9 flagship which, in terms of design, it was almost identical to the previous model. In fact, most of the devices that HTC has released in 2015 looked similar, and the reviews weren’t very favorable. Anyway, here’s a comparison between the One M9 and One A9 – the latter being the first HTC smartphone released with Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box.
Designs and Displays
Both the One M9 and One A9 have aluminum backs and two lines at the top and at the bottom, being strategically placed there in order to hide the radio antennas. Also, the edges are curved, so the devices feel comfortable to hold in one hand. While both devices have a screen of the same size (5-inch) and resolution (1080 x 1920 pixels at 441ppi), they’re using different technologies: Super LCD3 on the M9 and AMOLED on the A9. It’s known that Samsung’s displays provide more vibrant colors and the contrast is also better.
In terms of dimensions, the One M9 measures 144.6 x 69.7 x 9.6 mm and it weights 157 grams, while the A9 is much slimmer at 7.3mm and obviously, it’s lighter, weighting 143 grams. The One M9 has a large square rear camera under the first line, and on its front panel has BoomSound speakers, which are missing from the One A9. However, the latter device has the rear camera on top of the first line and has a circular lens. Because of that, Apple has accused HTC of copying the design of its iPhone, but let’s be honest, if you put side by side the One A9 and the iPhone 6S, you’ll see many differences between them.
Hardware
The HTC One M9 was released this spring and it’s part of the family of flagships, which means that it came with a faster processor than the A9, which is a mid-range device. The One M9 received the first edition of the Qualcomm MSM8994 Snapdragon 810 octa core processor, which ran at a speed of 2GHz, but which was criticized for having the overheating issues, which were causing the battery to drain fast. This processor was paired with the Adreno 430 GPU and 3GB of RAM, so theoretically, its performance should be quite amazing. As for the One A9, the device received the weaker Qualcomm MSM8952 Snapdragon 617 octa core processor clocked at 1.5GHz, which was coupled with an Adreno 405 GPU and either 2GB of RAM or 3GB of RAM, but these variants depend on the internal memory, which is available in capacities of 16GB and 32GB. The One M9 has 32GB of storage and it’s equipped with a microSD card slot, which allows expansion up to 200GB. This is the limit for the expandable memory of the One A9, as well.
Being slimmer, the One A9 houses a smaller battery of 2150 mAh, which offers 16 hours of talk time on 3G, with almost six hours less than the 2840 mAh battery of the One M9.
Cameras
The One M9 features a more advanced 20MP rear camera supporting an aperture of F/2.2 and features that include dual-LED (dual tone) flash, autofocus, 1/2.4″ sensor size, 1.2 µm pixel size and 4K video capture. The One A9 offers optical image stabilization in addition to the standard features, but the resolution of its rear camera is 13MP and the videos are recorded in Full HD. The good news is that both devices have a 4MP Ultrapixel front camera which performs great in low light conditions.
