Samsung and Nokia launched their Samsung Galaxy A8 and Nokia Lumia 930 to cater to medium budget smartphone buyers.
While the Galaxy A8 was released between June and July 2015, the Lumia 930 came out around the same time a year earlier. Both the gadgets support nano SIMs. However, while Samsung’s device houses provisions for inserting two SIM cards, Nokia does not offer this facility. Interestingly, one of the SIM card slots in the A8 can be used to accommodate a memory card. As can be expected from most smartphones, there is no way you can remove the batteries from these handsets.
Body Material, Design, Dimensions and Weight
The Samsung Galaxy A8 has a uniform metal build for both its body and accents. Embedded in an aluminum frame, the Nokia Lumia 930 also has an all metal body. Even as the Galaxy A8 has fairly rounded corners, the corners of the Lumia 930 are sharper making it look more like a typical rectangular handset. While each phone has volume control and phone lock/unlock buttons on its sides, the Nokia device has an additional button on the side for activating its camera.
The A8 measures 158 x 76.8 x 5.9 mm and weighs 151g. In contrast, the 930 has a size of 131 x 71 x 9.8mm with a weight of 167g.
Verdict: The rounded corners of the Samsung Galaxy A8 make it a more fashion symbol than the Nokia Lumia 930. Also because it is the less heavy phone of the two, it is more comfortable to hold in your hand or put into your pocket. But if you want a smartphone that is small in size, we recommend the Lumia.
Screen Display and Resolution
The Galaxy A8 uses a 5.7-inch Full HD Super AMOLED display screen while the Lumia 930 has an AMOLED ClearBlack display for its 5-inch screen. Considering the pixel resolution and pixel density, the A8 portrays 1080 x 1920 resolution and 386ppi against the 930 which has 441ppi pixel density for the same pixel resolution. Additionally, the display glass is made of Corning Gorilla Glass 3 scratch resistant glass in the Lumia 930, which supports wide viewing angle and brightness control functionalities.
Verdict: The Nokia Lumia 930 has many attributes favoring it as far as the screen is concerned. First, the greater pixel density makes the images and texts truly clearer and sharper although the screen is smaller. Second, the scratch-resistant glass gives the device less chance of suffering from scratches due to minor accidents. Third, the brightness control functionality assists in enhanced sunlight readability. However if you are more into online movie watching or reading or browsing, then the big screen of the Samsung Galaxy A8 will serve your needs better.
Camera
The Galaxy A8 has a 16MP single LED flash rear snapper in place of the 20MP dual LED flash camera in the Lumia 930. Both snappers support optical image stabilization to assure you of good quality low lighting shots. Additionally, the 930 snapper incorporates the PureView technology while its lens features the Carl Zeiss optics technology. These two technologies do not find a place for themselves in the A8. On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy A8 has a 5MP secondary camera when compared to the 1.2MP camera in the Nokia Lumia 930. Both handsets have a lot of camera apps for you to explore.
Verdict: Regarding the primary snapper, the Lumia 930 undoubtedly takes better videos and photos with a better megapixel camera. This is further improved because of the PureView technology. Additionally, the Carl Zeiss optics technology helps in accurate focusing at a minimum distance. But for video chats and selfies, the Galaxy A8 front snapper is more suitable.
Configuration and Expandable Memory
The A8 has an Exynos octa core processor that is actually a pair of quad core processors clocking at 1.8GHz and 1.3GHz, as well as an Adreno 405 graphics processor. In comparison, the 930 is designed with a Qualcomm Snapdragon quad core 2.2GHz processor and an Adreno 330 graphics processor. The key similarities in the handsets pertain to the RAM and inbuilt ROM, which are 2GB and 32GB respectively. While Samsung allows for external memory enhancement up to 128GB, Nokia does not provide this.
The Samsung Galaxy A8 is loaded with Lollipop, the latest version of Android. Like other smartphones from this manufacturer, it also has the TouchWiz UI for you to customize your device the way you wish to. The Nokia Lumia 930 comes with Windows 8.1 installed and a planned upgrade to Windows 10.
Verdict: There is no way of comparing the software in the two handsets as both the operating systems are completely different. However owing to the presence of two quad core processors and a more powerful graphics processor, the Samsung device is definitely faster and smoother in terms of performance. Also, the memory expansion possibility in this handset makes it seriously worth considering.
